Landslide damage between Popkum and Laidlaw still being cleaned up by crews

Large boulders, moving water and lane changes are just some of the hazards still affecting Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Hope.

Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl visited Hope earlier this week, and provided video of the most damaged areas of the major artery. The route is currently open to essential travel only. The speed limit is reduced to 50 km/hr for roughly the area between Popkum and Laidlaw.

Strahl’s video shows the level of debris and damage that road crews are dealing with as they work to get the highway fully back to normal.

For most of the affected stretch of highway, only the westbound lanes are in use as a two-lane highway. The eastbound lanes are where the work still needs to be completed.

The stretch is a major transportation route between the Lower Mainland and the rest of the province, as it is normally an easier route than the alternative, Highway 7. That portion of Highway 7 (from Agassiz to Hope) is also open to essential travel only.

Strahl’s visit to Hope included a meeting with Mayor Peter Robb and council, as well as stopping in at businesses, churches and organizations that helped when about 1,200 travellers were stranded in the town for several days.
