UPDATE: IHIT identifies victim in suspicious death in Chilliwack

IHIT is investigating a suspicious death after a body was found in a Chilliwack home early Thursday morning.

RCMP were on scene at First Avenue Thursday morning where they have blocked off a section of the road between Coote and Windsor streets.


Police investigators have identified the victim in Thursday's suspicious death in Chilliwack. He is 31-year-old Harjit (Stefan) Singh Kondolay.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which had taken over investigation of the incident, said Kondolay was not known to police.

Chilliwack RCMP closed off a section of First Avenue between Coote Street and Windsor Street early Thursday morning after a report of a suspicious and sudden death.

Police asked the public to stay away from the area as officers conducted their investigation into the incident. The street was closed for several hours.

RCMP were called to a residence just after 4 a.m. in the 46700-block of First Avenue after a man was found dead inside the house. Neighbours reported hearing a woman yelling before police arrived.

Local RCMP have since handed the investigation over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

“I can confirm that IHIT has now taken conduct of this investigation," said RCMP Sgt. Bari Emam of IHIT. "Our investigators are working with members of the Chilliwack RCMP and will examine the scene in an attempt to determine what took place.

"We are in the initial hours of the investigation and many details surrounding this death are not known at this time."

Sgt. EMAM was not be available for any additional comment, but IHIT is now asking anyone who was in the area of 46700 block of First Avenue in Chilliwack last night or in the early morning hours of today who may have witnessed anything suspicious in relation to this incident to please call the IHIT Tipline at 1-877-551-4448 by email at ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
