Agassiz RCMP were called out to an incident at Kent Institution Wednesday night (Feb. 3), after an altercation between two inmates.

According to Sgt. Mike Sargent, the RCMP responded to an incident at the maximum security prison around 9 p.m. Wednesday. At least two inmates were involved in an altercation, which ended in two of them being taken to hospital for their injuries. One was airlifted by helicopter.

According to Kent Instititution, a partial lockdown at the prison was put in place to allow for a review of the incident, and assess any risks to staff and inmates. The incident remains under investigation by RCMP and the institution.

Normal operations will resume when it is safe to do so.

In addition, there was another inmate in medical distress who was also taken to hospital, RCMP said.
