Two people and a dog were able to escape an early-morning house fire on Third Avenue in Chilliwack Saturday morning.

The Chilliwack Fire Department was alerted to the blaze which started around 6:15 a.m. in the 46,000-block of Third Avenue.

Fire crews from Halls 1, 4, 5 and 6 responded to the scene and upon arrival discovered heavy smoke and flames showing from a two-storey home and a shed on the adjacent property.

Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control by using a defensive attack, but the top floor and roof of the home suffered extensive fire damage, while the main floor had some water and smoke damage.

Through their swift actions, fire crews also prevented the flames from spreading to homes immediately adjacent to the burning structure.

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported at this fire and the occupants of the home were able to safely exit. The Chilliwack Emergency Support Services (ESS) team was called out to the scene and is providing care to the displaced occupants.

This fire is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP fire investigators. If anyone has any information about this fire, they are asked to call the RCMP at 604-792-4611 or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.chilliwackcrimestoppers.ca
