Chilliwack firefighters were kept busy with two residential fires on Saturday.

Just after noon, fire crews from three halls responded to reports of a structure fire in the 9300 block of Broadway.

They arrived to a large volume of smoke venting from a single storey home.

Crews quickly brought the fire under control and were able to contain the fire to a single bedroom, reported Assistant Fire Chief Chris Wilson.

The rest of the home, however, suffered extensive smoke and heat damage.

The four occupants of the home were alerted to the fire by their two dogs and were able to get out safely.

The cause of this fire is under investigation by Chilliwack fire officials.

The home did not appear to have working smoke alarms, said Wilson. “The Chilliwack Fire Department would like to remind the public that working smoke alarms can greatly reduce the chance of being injured or dying in a fire.”

The second fire occurred roughly eight minutes after crews arrived on scene at the Broadway fire.

That fire broke out at a home in the 45000 block of Reece Avenue.

When crews arrived, they found a minor amount of smoke and flame coming from the exterior of the home near the roof. The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was limited to a very small area on the exterior of the structure near the electrical service.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported as a result of these fires, Wilson said.
