There’s no date for the ground-breaking yet but plans are well underway for two six-storey apartment buildings at the former Safeway site in downtown Chilliwack.
The huge redevelopment project in downtown Chilliwack by Mann Development is “ongoing and nearing construction,” according to David Blain, director of engineering and planning.
Building permits for phase one of the long-awaited redevelopment with apartment buildings and an amenity building, are ready for issuance and pick-up.
Phase one will see construction of 193 apartment units, in two six-storey buildings served by underground parking. An indoor amenity space over three storeys will have access to an outdoor amenity area to be equipped with a play structure.
The number of apartments in the two complexes grew recently from 183 to 193.
The next phase the developers are entering into has two commercial buildings facing Main Street.
The form and character of the commercial component had been approved by city council but the permit has since expired.
“New development permit applications will be required. As such, building permit applications have not yet been submitted by the developer for the commercial retail units,” Blain said.
The old Safeway site is bordered by Main Street, Kipp Avenue, Mary Street and Princess Avenue on a three-acre parcel.
All eyes have been on this redevelopment site in recent years because it was viewed as pivotal in the revitalization of Chilliwack’s downtown.
