'Suspicious package' no threat: RCMP

A "suspicious package" found in a mailbox on Centennial Drive early Wednesday turned out to be an improvised firework, Chilliwack RCMP said.

"This situation was treated as if the package was an explosive," Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.

"Until the officers who specialize in the explosives field were confident that the package was not a threat, every precaution was taken to keep the public as safe as possible," she said.

Centennial Drive was blocked to traffic, and residents advised to stay indoors until an Explosive Detection Unit and Police Dog Service arrived on the scene.

Police were called at about 8:40 a.m. when the package was found by a Canada Post employee in the "outgoing" mail compartment of a community mailbox.

Wolbeck said the package was "basically a big firework wrapped in duct tape" which the experts determined was not an explosive threat.
