Ugly Potato Day is returning to a South Surrey farm this weekend, offering residents an opportunity to load up on free homegrown spuds.
Tyler Heppell of Heppell’s Potato Corp. said the event – typically held a few times over the summer – is set for noon to 3 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 17) at the 4945 184 St. farm.
Launched to help reduce the number of edible potatoes that go to waste due to their odd shape, growth cracks or bruises, the initiative invites residents, particularly those who are struggling with food security, to stop by the property and fill up on the “perfectly fine” fare.

It has been well-received in the past.
“Last year this time, we had (around) 4,500 people come out,” Heppell said Tuesday (Sept. 12).
“I don’t think it will be that much (this time), but it should be over 1,000, hopefully.”
Heppell said in the past, many who turn out leave with more than just potatoes for their own plates.
“A lot of people will come and pick up potatoes for their community,” he said. “One person may come and affect, like, 10 other people’s lives.”
In addition, many who aren’t struggling will “come in an grab five or 10 lbs and donate $20 or $30 to our food bank.”
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank is one of three charities that benefit from donations, Heppell said. Funds – some $6,400 was raised during one of the biggest events – are also shared with Raphael House in Langley and the Cloverdale Community Kitchen.
