Chilliwack RCMP are warning the public about a possible scam after an elderly couple were bilked out of $6,500.
The couple had been contacted and told they had won a lottery prize worth $1 million.
In order to receive their funds, they were requested to send financial installments to a person who identified himself as a lawyer.
“The couple sent a total of $6,500 to an overseas account,” said Const. Tracy Wolbeck.
“These are not uncommon; we have seen them before,” she added. “We want the public to be aware that this lottery scam has occurred in the past and to always question when being requested to send money.”
Once money has been sent it is very difficult, through police investigation, to reacquire those funds, she said.
If anyone has any information regarding this fraud, are asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at (604)792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1(800 )222-8477 (TIPS).
