A roadside memorial is paying tribute to a young Abbotsford girl whose cause of death is a mystery to her loved ones.

The large memorial to Alexcia Myanna McKamey displays a white cross surrounded by floral arrangements, candles, pink toys, photos of the tyke, and messages of grief and love.

A tree on site is adorned with balloons, paper lanterns and glow sticks, while two carved pumpkins display the message "RIP Alexcia."

The program from her memorial service – held Oct. 5 at Northside Community Church in Mission – encapsulates her short life.

"Born July 8, 2012 – Abbotsford, BC. Entered Heaven September 20, 2013," it states. "God's precious little angel."

But what the memorial, located on Elmwood Drive near the Discovery Trail in Abbotsford, does not indicate is how Alexcia died.

Those are details that even her family does not yet know.

Alexcia is the 14-month-old whose death in Chilliwack on Sept. 20 is the subject of an investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

RCMP were called to a house on Mullins Road in Chilliwack at about 10 p.m. that day, when the baby appeared to be in medical distress.

She was taken to hospital, where attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. IHIT took over the file, when the death was considered to involve foul play, and an autopsy was to be conducted.

A man was arrested in connection with the incident, but was released without charges. Messages posted online indicate that Alexcia's father was the man arrested, but police have never confirmed that.

Police at the time said the baby did not live at the home to which police were dispatched nor were the homeowners involved in her death.

Alexcia lived in Abbotsford with her mom, Jacqueline.

According to messages posted on Facebook, Jacqueline set up the roadside memorial so Alexcia "knows how many think of her and are with her while we wait to find out what happened.

"I feel like I can't leave her side until we figure this all out. Would love some visitors to show how many are with us through this difficult time."

The Abbotsford News has not yet been able to speak with Jacqueline.

IHIT has not released any further details on Alexcia's death, saying further information will be provided as it becomes available.

Comments posted online express dismay that the family has not been told how the toddler died.

"Please give some answers. This is is tragic," stated one post.

"It is absolutely ridiculous that the mother of this poor angel has no answer to what happened to her 14-month-old baby … Where is the justice for this sweet angel and her family?" stated another.
