Crime hotspots in the Chilliwack area have been identified by the RCMP in its monthly COMPSTAT report.
The COMPSTAT —- or comparative statistics model of policing — allows deployment of police resources to high crime areas where they will have the most effect, and alerts residents in the hotspot so they can report suspicious activity to police.
Most property crimes are crimes of opportunity, and police are reminding the public not to leave valuables in their vehicles at any time, and to ensure that homes are locked before leaving.
"If the opportunity is reduced or eliminated, you will likely not become a victim of property crime," RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.
The first hotspot in north Chilliwack covers Exhibition Park east to Young Road including Kipp Avenue, Corbould Street, Wellington Avenue, Patten Avenue, Mary Street, Spadina Avenue, Mill Street, and Yale Road.
Seventeen property crimes were reported in the area from March 5-31, including six home break-ins, four business break-ins and 11 vehicle crimes.
The second hotspot, also in north Chilliwack, covers Williams Street west to Young Road, between 1st Avenue and Reece Avenue.
Twelve property crimes were reported in the area from March 5-31, including eight home break-ins and four business break-ins.
The third hotspot, also in north Chilliwack, covers Yale Road, from Parr Road to Hocking Avenue, over to Hocking Avenue east of the railroad tracks to Young Road.
Ten property crimes were reported in the area from March 7-29 including nine thefts from vehicles and one business break-in.
The fourth hotspot, in south Chilliwack, covers Spruce Drive to Luckakuck Way between Evans Road/Vedder Road, including Knight Road, Jasper Drive and Wells Road.
Twelve property crimes were reported in the area from March 12-29.
The fifth hotspot, also in south Chilliwack, covers Garrison Crossing, the Watson Glen Park area, which includes Peach Road, Hipwell Place, Alma Avenue, Shawnigan Crescent, Vedder Road and Thomas Road.
Thirteen property crimes, including home and business break-ins and several thefts from vehicles, were reported in the area from March 1-29.
A hotspot in the Agassiz-Rosdedale area saw 13 property crimes, including three home break-ins and several thefts from vehicles from March 6 to April 1. The hotspot includes Mam Mam Road, Old Yale Road, West Victor Drive, Nevin Road, Aberdeen Crescent, Yale Road East, Bridal Falls Road, Sussex Drive, Llanberis Way and McGrath Road.
