Chilliwack RCMP and CN Police are reminding folks of the dangers of railway crossings.

Rail Safety Week is Sept. 20 to 26 and police are reaching out to motorists and pedestrians to promote safe habits at rail crossings and tracks across the Upper Fraser Valley region.

They’ll be at level crossings (intersections where a railway line crosses a road or path) throughout the week.

“Road safety remains a priority of the Upper Fraser Valley Regional District,” said Sgt. Dennis Bell of the Chilliwack RCMP. “In partnership with fellow law enforcement agencies our goal is to prevent injuries and fatalities along the railroads in our communities.”

Railroad safety tips for motorists:

• Slow down when approaching a railroad crossing;

• Do not cross the track until the rail crossing lights stop flashing, the warning bell stops ringing and the train has passed;

• Never race to cross a track in front of an oncoming train.

Railroad safety tips for pedestrians and cyclists:

• Never walk, cycle, drive along or on railroad tracks and trestles.
