UPDATED:

RCMP have called off the search for a body in the Fraser River near the Agassiz Rosedale Bridge after a members of the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team (URT) spent Thursday on site, using sonar to canvas the water.

A young couple reportedly discovered a submerged body while swimming in the river two days prior. They alerted police to their grim discovery Tuesday, and local search and rescue groups were deployed to comb the area, but the body had seemingly slipped back beneath the surface.

Kent Harrison Search and Rescue (KHSAR) and Chilliwack SAR searched the area extensively. KHSAR manager Neil Brewer said the team used a ‘wire basket stretcher’ dropped between two seadoos – effectively creating a large net – to comb the water.

After two days without progress, URT were called to the area.

The underwater team used sonar – sound waves that detect submerged objects – to try to locate a body in the area not far from the start of the Agassiz Rosedale Bridge.

URT members are general duty police officers in B.C. detachments, using specific water training only when the need arises.
