Chilliwack’s next roundabout will be constructed next year on Vedder Mountain Road at Cultus Lake Road.
Officials are in the detailed design phase this month for the $1.8 million intersection improvement project.
The new single-lane roundabout is one of eight transportation and drainage projects moving forward under one large, combination design-build contract, according to a City of Chilliwack engineering staff report.
The total value of the combination project is $7.1 million, with the contract awarded to Eurovia BC/Emil Anderson Construction by Chilliwack council last month.
Wall construction and road widening will be getting underway in the September-October months of 2017.
The reason for bundling the projects into one large contract is an attempt to maximize value through economies of scale, according to the staff report.
The roundabout method in traffic engineering is known for effectively and safely moving vehicles smoothly through an intersection.
The other projects in the combined contract include: Sardis Rail Trail North Phase I, Promontory/Chilliwack River turn lane; Promontory/Teskey Detention Pond, Evans/Stevenson signalization, Yarrow/Kehler pedestrian signal, Portage Avenue sidewalk, Selkirk Street sidewalk.
November 2018 is when project completion is expected on the Vedder Mtn/Cultus roundabout portion. Funding was allocated for the projects within the 2017 budget.
