The City of Chilliwack is set to announce plans to hire additional RCMP officers on Monday.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz and Supt. Deanne Burleigh, officer in charge for the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment, will hold a press conference at City Hall Monday morning to discuss details.

In addition to announcing the new members, Monday’s press conference will also look at additional crime reduction initiatives.

No details have been released. In a brief statement issued late Thursday, the city said “council wants the community to know the steps that are being actively pursued to address crime in Chilliwack.”

The escalating crime rate in Chilliwack has sparked intense debate over the past few weeks. Most recently a joint initiative between Chilliwack, Mission and Abbotsford was launched to focus on chronic offenders.

Crime has risen dramatically over the past year: theft from vehicles is up 57 per cent,  property crime up 33 per cent, and weapons offences a soaring 114 per cent.
