Two people have been arrested after an early-morning car chase in Mission which involved spike strips and a police dog.

At 8:35 a.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 26), a member of the Mission RCMP crime reduction unit noticed a stolen late-model Audi occupied by a man and a woman near the Dewdney Pub.

The vehicle had been reported stolen from the Mission area just a few minutes earlier.

According to an RCMP press release, several police vehicles converged at the end of Newton Road and stopped the Audi.

The female passenger was arrested without incident and is being held pending her release with a local court appearance.

The man sped off, collided with two police vehicles and drove through an open field.

A spike belt was then deployed, and several of the car’s tires were punctured. The Audi continued to drive on flattened, shredded tires.

The vehicle eventually stopped after it crashed into a civilian vehicle near Jones Terrace and Dewdney Trunk Road. The driver was not seriously injured and declined on-scene medical attention.

The suspect immediately ran from the Audi and – with the assistance of marked patrol units, the crime reduction unit and an Abbotsford Police dog handler – was taken into custody following a 30-minute dog track.

The man was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries from the police dog.

The names of the suspect and the passenger are not being released until charges are formally laid.

Cpl. Jason Raaflaub from the Mission RCMP confirmed that the man is a priority property-crime target and, at the time of his arrest, was wanted on a warrant from Abbotsford Police.

He is being held pending a court appearance.

Charges being recommended agasint him include fleeing from police, breaching his conditions, possessing stolen property over $5,000 and driving while prohibited.
