Mayoralty candidate: Sharon Gaetz

City of Chilliwack: Gaetz, Sharon – Mayoralty candidate: Gaetz seeks third term

Sharon Gaetz

I am pleased to announce that I will once again, be running for Mayor in the upcoming election.   Our City is in an enviable position.  I have worked hard with our council to ensure that we continue to have the lowest taxes in the Lower Mainland, while providing first class amenities.  In my tenure as mayor, we have built and paid for the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, the Sardis Library, synthetic turf fields, a regional bike park, new skateboard parks in Yarrow and Sardis, upgrades to our wastewater treatment plant and contributed to the three brand new schools; Rosedale, Yarrow and Chilliwack Senior Secondary.  We have added to our trails and bike paths, improved roads and much more.  We have hired additional police officers and firefighters.  All of this has been done without incurring debt.  We continue our ‘pay as you go’ philosophy.   We have added to our transit system and our ridership has skyrocketed.  Business has expanded and we have been noted as one of the top 10 cities in which to invest in the Province.

Our investment has not only been in bricks and mortar, but in people.  We have been partners in opening the Chilliwack Health and Housing Contact Centre , The Village on School Street  and the Cyrus Centre for youth.  Homeless people in our city have found shelter and most importantly, homes and a sense of community and belonging.

I have much more that I would like to do.  The vision that our council has established for the revitalization of the heart of our City, the downtown core, has begun in earnest.  We have purchased land, and continue our work to reduce crime and social issues in our downtown.   We will need to begin our next phase of actively marketing properties that we have purchased and work together with the development community to create something of which we can all be proud.  I will continue to work hard on behalf of the citizens of our city.  I am thankful for the 18 years I have served in local government and I look forward to serving another term.
