A preferred site is in place and preliminary plans have been mapped out.
“Now we’re getting a new library.”
With that pronouncement Tuesday afternoon in council chambers, Mayor Sharon Gaetz acknowledged the choice of a Tyson Road site for the proposed new library on the southside.
“It’s something we’ve thought about and dreamt about for a long time,” she said.
“It’s grown from the idea of a boutique library into something more.”
The estimated price tag is about $3.8 million.
A working group comprising FVRL and city officials decided the new library should be located at 5718 Tyson Road, between Twin Rinks arena and Mt. Slesse Middle school.
The existing skate park will have to be relocated slightly to make room for the new facility.
Subject to rezoning approval, the city is planning construction of a new library at Twin Rinks, featuring a building that measures almost 10,000 square feet.
“We kept coming back to this location,” said Coun. Ken Huttema about the working group that chose the proposed site. “It will be a great addition to the area.”
Project costs are covered under the city’s 2012 budget, and financing will not be required.
An open house for the Southside library is set for July 6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Fraser Room at Twin Rinks.
