Leaders of Tomorrow: Fiona Tymm

For Chilliwack student, Fiona Tymm, the world is her oyster.

The world is Fiona Tymm’s oyster.

That’s the attitude the Grade 12 Sardis secondary graduate is taking once high school comes to an end.

She isn’t following the pack, isn’t falling prey to others expectations, she’s doing what she wants to do.

“People always say you just have to graduate and then you can do whatever you want, but no, then everyone expects you to go to university,” said Tymm. “So now I’m just kind of saying, no I can go wherever and do whatever I want.”

This fall, Tymm will be embarking on a “life-finding” humanitarian mission in Africa.

She hopes to spend anywhere from one month to five months working in a third-world orphanage or hospital.

This trip, she said, will be the start of many more.

Tymm, who will be attending the University of British Columbia in January, plans on becoming a doctor, and wants to go back overseas regularly with her medical expertise.

“I just like knowing that you’ve made a difference, and that you’re not just doing things for yourself and sitting at home on Facebook,” she said.

However, all through her school career, Tymm led organized events, participated in lunchtime intramurals, played school sports including basketball, field hockey and ice hockey. For her, school was never just about going to the classes.

So, how can she possibly handle no longer having that social structure in her life?

“I think if I was just planning on staying home and working and not doing anything, it would be hard,” she said. “But I’m going to find myself. I’m going back to the basics. I’m going to experience something that others won’t ever.

“It’s going to be really humbling just knowing that there’s always more to give.”
