Chilliwack Fire Department were called to a structure fire in the 41000-block of South Sumas Road late Thursday night.

Two people were at home when the fire broke out, and heard the smoke alarm sounding from the upstairs hallway of the house. Upon investigation they found smoke and flames coming from the attic.

One of the occupants tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but was overcome by smoke, and ended up exiting the building while calling 911.

A total of 28 firefighters responded from Halls 1, 4 and 6, and on arrival reported smoke coming from the eaves of the structure.

“Fire crews setup an offensive attack, entered the structure, and extinguished the fire in the attic,” according to the release.

The single-family home suffered minor fire and smoke damage. One occupant was assessed by B.C. ambulance personnel for smoke inhalation but was release at the scene.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The fire appears to be accidental.

“Chilliwack Fire Department wants to remind the public that working smoke alarms save lives and smoke alarms should be tested monthly with batteries being changed twice a year.”
