Prep work started this week on the new Giant Flowers artwork construction project, and it was causing traffic tie-ups in the Evans Roundabout.

Avoid the Evans Road Roundabout if you can right now.

Prep work started this week on the new artwork construction project, and it was causing traffic tie-ups Thursday and part of Friday morning.

There is electrical and foundation work to complete on the centre island in advance of the installation so the existing landscaping and top soil has to be removed.

The contractor’s plan is to build a small driveway to minimize traffic control issues in the roundabout when the Giant Flowers artwork is installed later this spring.

The inside lane of the roundabout has been closed intermittently during the day since Feb. 1, and will continue to be while the prep work is underway.

Once installed later this year, Giant Flowers by Ronald Simmer, will be the first significant piece of public art in Chilliwack visible from the highway.

The artwork elements are being shipped to Chilliwack around mid-month.
