High streamflow advisory issued for Chilliwack River

Rainfall amounts expected to total nearly 65 mm in some parts of the eastern Fraser Valley

A high streamflow advisory has been issued for the Chilliwack River as heavy rain continued to pound the region Thursday.

The advisory was posted by the B.C. River Forecast Centre, part of several issued for the South Coast. It includes the Chilliwack River – which has risen nearly half a metre in the past 24 hours – as well as “mountainous tributaries on the north side of the Fraser Valley.”

Additional rainfall is expected throughout the day, with as much as 65 millimetres predicted by Friday.

At higher elevations, that moisture is turning to snow, creating headaches on the mountain passes east of Chilliwack. Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden remained closed most of the day for avalanche control.

The heavy rain – which prompted a rainfall warning from Environment Canada for Chilliwack and the eastern Fraser Valley – is expected to give way to showers on Friday.

But the wet weather will linger well into next week, with more rain expected.
