UPDATE: One person dead following early morning shooting in Chilliwack

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says the attack is believed to be targeted

Chilliwack RCMP have confirmed that one person is dead following an early morning shooting in the 9500 block of Williams Street.

The Integrated Homicide Investigative Team has taken over the investigation.

The area was cordoned off by police tape early Sunday morning, following what sounded like a gunshot.

Williams Street at Reece Avenue is closed off, and there was a heavy police presence from about 4 a.m. Witnesses close by say there was a team from the IHIT unit that arrived at the scene at about 9:30 a.m.

Neighbours are being told the entire portion of the street is being considered a crime scene.

A resident in the area says there was a gunshot early this morning, followed by a car speeding off.

“The Chilliwack RCMP can confirm that the victim of the shooting is deceased,” said Staff Sgt. Stephen Vrolyk in a statement released by police Sunday afternoon.

IHIT said the shooting appears to be targeted.

They offered no other information, saying the investigation was still in its early stages, and that the victim was male.

The incident is just the latest in a series of shootings in the Lower Mainland. On Thursday night in Abbotsford an 18-year-old man was shot and killed in what police described as a targeted attack.

Then, early Friday morning two people were shot dead in Langley. Police again said the victims were likely targeted.

Anyone with any information about the Chilliwack shooting is asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
