This head-on collision on Ashwell Road Saturday afternoon claimed the life of one woman.

An 87-year-old Chilliwack woman is dead and two people are in critical condition following a three-vehicle accident at Ashwell Road and Lazenby Road Saturday afternoon.

According to Chilliwack RCMP, early reports suggest one of the vehicles crossed the centre line, resulting in a head-on collision.

The accident occurred at around 3:40 p.m. at the intersection just south of Bernard Avenue. The woman was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

"It does not appear at this time that alcohol was in any way a factor in this collision," said Const. Tracy Wolbeck.  "ICARS (Lower Mainland District Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services) will continue their investigation into the cause of this tragic accident."

At this time, two people remain in hospital in critical condition. The identity of the 87-year-old Chilliwack woman killed in the crash is being withheld pending confirmation of the next of kin notifications.
