Harrison Hot Springs is set to decide on a name for its new outdoor skating rink tonight in council.

The synthetic rink will be installed in the boat launch parking lot for this winter, providing a space for locals and visitors to go ice-skating no matter what the weather. The rink will be shaped like an oval, with a hollow centre to allow for displays like trees or lights, and will allow for 60 skaters at one time.

The $130,000 rink is being paid for by this year’s Resort Municipality Infrastructure (RMI) funds, provided by the provincial government through the hotel tax.

On the agenda for tonight’s meeting is the proposed name for the outdoor rink.

So far, staff have recommended the following as possible options:

Canoe Cove Skating Rink, as the area next to the rink is locally known as Canoe Cove.

Lakeside Leisure Skating Rink, as the lake is close-by and leisure implies the intended use of the facility.

South Shore Skating Rink, as the rink will be located on the south shore of the lake.

Council may suggest other options during the meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Village office on Tuesday (Oct. 1).
