Green cart collection continues to Saturday across Chilliwack

Everyone asked for a little patience as they work out the kinks

Some green carts in Chilliwack didn’t get emptied this week.

Waste contractor, Emterra Environmental, had to dispatch some extra trucks to go around Chilliwack again on Friday and Saturday, to finish the job.

Emterra and City of Chilliwack reps are asking everyone for a little patience as they work the kinks out of the new curbside collection system.

The rollout of the compostables program hit a snag earlier this week as they did not have all the trucks with green-cart lift capacity in operation yet.

Some green carts had to be either emptied manually by Emterra personnel — or left at the curb with all the food waste, and compostables inside, with the intention to collect them by the end of the week.

Some citizens were also a tad confused as different sized carts were delivered at different times during the program launch. For some their garbage/recycling collection day also changed.

To ensure the green carts get fully emptied, officials say to line them with newspaper, paper bags or cardboard. Place the heavier materials on the bottom to allow gravity to help empty them.

Officials are keenly aware there is a learning curve, providing printed info that came with the carts, online at www.chilliwack.com/curbside or by calling 604-793-2787.

Here are the weight limits, which caused some confusion, and they are found in the Curbside Collection Guide and in the Chilliwack Curbside Collection App:

Maximum weight for Green Cart of 80L (50kg), 120L (55kg), 240L (100kg), or 360L (150kg).
