Four hour standoff ends peacefully

One man is in custody, facing charges after a tense standoff with RCMP officers Tuesday.

Chilliwack RCMP were busy for four hours Tuesday, defusing a tense situation in the 46000 block of Portage Avenue.

Police were called at 10:35 a.m., and responded to reports of an assault and a man uttering threats.

They found the suspect holed up in a house, refusing to come out.

Because the threats the man allegedly made were very serious, the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team (ERT), Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS) and several general duty officers all converged on the scene.

While an RCMP negotiator tried to make contact with the suspect, several nearby residences were evacuated.

“Our first priority in a situation like this is, of course, the safety of the public," said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. "This was a very intense and dynamic situation for all of our officers involved. In the end, after several hours of negotiating, two males exited the residence and were peacefully taken into police custody."

One of the men, a 38 year old Chilliwack native, is in custody.
