Fisherman still missing after boat capsizes in the Fraser

RCMP and search and rescue crews continued looking for one of three men dumped into the Fraser River when their boat capsized Saturday.

A 49-year-old man is still missing after the boat he shared with two others capsized in the swift waters of the Fraser River Saturday.

RCMP and Kent/Harrison Search and Rescue volunteers scoured the shoreline for the missing man and an RCMP helicopter was called in for the search, but to no avail.

Police said the fishing boat with three men on board capsized at about 3:20 p.m. near the Agassiz-Rosedale bridge.

An RCMP boat was on the river in the same area when the call came that a boat was taking on water and starting to sink.

“The boat began to capsize and the occupants of the boat were not able to control the roll of the boat and it began to sink,” Staff Sergeant Sukh Parmar said in a news release.

“Two of the occupants were able to swim to shore, however one male occupant, 49, was not able to swim across the strong current,” he said.

The name of the missing man is not being released until family members are notified.

The search continued Monday.
