Firefighters battle barn fire

A late afternoon blaze damaged a barn irreparably and may have caused more chaos if not for the work of firefighters.

Firefighters from four halls battled a barn fire in the 5100 block of Sherlaw Road in Ryder Lake late Thursday afternoon.

Just before 5 p.m. a family member came home and saw light smoke emerging from a barn on the property.

The family member called 9-1-1, then moved quickly to get three dogs out of harm's way.

When firefighters arrived the single-story barn, usually used as a workshop, was fully engulfed in flames. The fire also spread to a couple of large trees, and they adopted a defensive strategy to keep it contained.

The barn suffered major damage and can't be salvaged.

There were no injuries and, while the incident is still being investigated, the cause looks to be accidental.
