Fire destroys barn in Chilliwack

No livestock lost in early morning blaze that destroyed one barn and threatened another.

No livestock were injured in a barn fire early Monday morning on Chilliwack Central Road.

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 12:30 a.m. and found a "commodity" barn of hay and equipment fully involved and threatening a second barn where cattle were housed.

But the barn owners were able to herd the cattle to safety, with the help of firefighters.

"The owners were wrangling the little guys when we arrived," Assistant Fire Chief Jim MacDonald said.

He said the firefighters first attacked the flames threatening the exterior of the cattle barn, and then went after the commodity barn.

But the roof had already collapsed there, and it was eventually destroyed by the fire.

Twenty-two firefighters from three fire halls responded to the fire call.

No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
