Fire at Mt. Slesse school sends students home for the afternoon

Mt. Slesse middle school was evacuated Monday morning after a fire broke out in a storage room on the second floor.

Staff and students were evacuated safely after the fire alarm was activated, and no injuries were reported, said Chilliwack Fire Department’s assistant fire chief Jeff Ullyot.

Damage was limited to contents of a shelving unit in the storage room, next to a science lab.

But there were no flammable chemical materials ignited, he said, just “class A” or ordinary combustibles.

“It certainly appears accidental,” Ullyot added.

Firefighters quickly doused the fire and extinguished any hot spots to contain the damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
