Agassiz RCMP have determined that fatigue might have been a factor in a crash that claimed three lives in July.
At approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 9, Agassiz RCMP were called to the scene of a motor vehicle incident on the 8100 block of Highway 7.
A small, westbound vehicle occupied by a family of three collided head-on with an eastbound tractor trailer; the driver and one adult passenger were pronounced dead on the scene. The third occupant, an infant girl, was airlifted to hospital but died a few hours later. The driver of the tractor trailer did not suffer any apparent physical injuries.
The driver of the tractor trailer has been offered support from the RCMP Victim Services team.
An investigation determined that the westbound vehicle entered into the eastbound lane sometime before both drivers made a last-second effort to avoid a crash.
"I encourage all motorists who are experiencing fatigue to pull over in a safe place and rest," said Agassiz RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Andy Lot. "I would like to thank my officers and all the first responders who attended to this tragic incident for their hard work and dedication for this investigation."
The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
