A dangerous offender who was serving time at Mountain Institution has died behind bars.
Jack Froese, 34, was found unresponsive in his cell on Feb. 12 at the medium security prison. His sentence began on Jun. 28, 2013 for a series of charges that include kidnapping, sexual assault with a weapon and uttering threats to cause death and harm.
Froese pleaded guilty in 2012 to charges of kidnapping and sexual assault after he abducted a woman from a business in Kamloops on Nov. 24, 2011.
He drugged and assaulted her over a period of hours, injected her with cocaine, .
Videotape was key evidence in the court case, and the victim also testified in court, surrounded by family and friends.
During sentencing, one member of the public yelled at Froese to “die in there.”
Justice Peter Rogers had called Froese a sexual deviant, who had committed serious crimes from the time he was 13 years old. He was placed in the 99th percentile for re-offending, so his sentence was indeterminate.
“He has no empathy for his victim,” Rogers had said during sentencing. Froese was convicted of sexual assault in 2003 and again in 2004, when he raped a Saskatoon hotel worker at knifepoint for 25 minutes.
His victim from Kamloops fought her way through the attack, and eventually escaped.
“I think I beat him at his own game,” she said in court.
An official statement from Mountain stated that Froese’s next of kin have been notified, and the death will be reviewed by Correctional Service Canada.
