Community mailboxes hit by thieves in Chilliwack

Chilliwack RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance to curb a recent rash of thefts from community mailboxes.

A girl runs past a community mailbox at the corner of Brookwood Place and Palmer Place that was a target of recent mail theft. The mailbox has a bright yellow sign on it reading 'Not in service'

The scourge of mail theft is still plaguing Chilliwack.

Four community mailboxes were targeted on Feb. 11, according to Canada Post.

RCMP is now taking the step of asking for the public’s assistance to prevent this type of crime with some specific prevention tips.

“Our crime reduction section is actively investigating this series of thefts,” said RCMP Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “We need the assistance of the general public to deter these thefts.”

Locations of the mailboxes included 46000 block of Yale Road, Chilliwack Lake Road and Auchenway Road, Brookwood Place and Palmer Place, and Annis Road and Prairie Central Road.

Police ask residents to:

• Pick up the mail daily

• Report immediately any vandalism to mailboxes and/or theft of mail immediately to the Police and Canada Post

• Report suspicious vehicles or people around mail boxes or in the neighbourhood.

• Keep track of financial documents or cheques received by mail and to immediately report any loss or theft of such items to the appropriate financial institutions.

Anyone who is a victim of mail theft is asked to contact Canada Post Security at 1-800-267-1177 as well as Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611. Anyone with information on these thefts who wishes to remain anonymous is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
