Chilliwack school kids draw ‘don’t drink and drive’ messages on liquor store bags

Children from six elementary schools decorate bags as part of promotion created by local Mountie

It’s one thing to be lectured to by the authorities about the dangers of drinking and driving, but when the message comes from children, it’s hard to ignore.

The Chilliwack RCMP and some local liquor stores teamed up to spread a message from school kids to motorists over the Christmas Season: “Don’t Drink and Drive.”

Paper bags collected from four local liquor stores by a Chilliwack RCMP officer were offered to the students of six elementary schools for their artistic statements cautioning motorists not to drink and drive.

With art completed, the bags were returned to the stores for circulation to consumers.

“Our goal is to heighten awareness to the danger and the prevention of impaired driving in the community during the holiday season,” said Const. Zachary Leheniuk of the Chilliwack RCMP.

With December’s CounterAttack campaign underway the RCMP will also be doing their part to remove impaired drivers from roadways through enhanced traffic enforcement over the holiday season.

“We encourage motorists to listen to the kids and arrange ahead of time for a safe ride home if ‘spirits’ are part of plan,” said Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Rail.

Plan a safe trip home:

· Arrange for a designated driver.

· Travel by public transit or taxi.

· Stay overnight.

Available Fridays and Saturdays after 9 p.m. during the month of December Operation Red Nose drivers can be contacted at 604-393-3000 to provide a means of getting home safely.
