Coun. Sue Attrill announced Tuesday she is stepping away from her work on city council after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I will likely have to miss a few things over the coming months while I receive treatment, but I love my job and the work I do for the city, so I will be working through as much as possible,” Attrill said in a brief public statement at city hall during councillors’ reports.

The city councillor, who is also executive director of Chilliwack Hospice Society, said she hopes she will be well enough to return to work as soon as possible after treatment.

“I want to thank the mayor, my fellow councillors and our staff for their support. We have a great team here at City Hall.”

Attrill said before the meeting she wanted to strongly urge all women to get screened at a mammography clinic, and offered a little public health message.

“And for all the women out there, don’t wait to get a mammogram – it’s so important!” she concluded.

Coun. Attrill was first elected to council in 2008. She chairs the Public Art Advisory Committee, and others, and the committee work will be covered by her fellow councillors in her absence.
