BCCDC: Fraser Valley cities no longer most COVID-infected in Lower Mainland

Case rate has more than halved in most areas since November

The most infectious city in the Lower Mainland is now North Vancouver, with 206 cases and a rate of 19 per 100,000. In some areas, the case rate is as high of 25 per 100,000, while the most infectious area in the Fraser Valley (by a large margin), South Mission, has a case rate of 19 per 100,000. The Fraser Valley no longer has the most infectious cities in the Lower Mainland. In most areas, the case rates have dropped significantly, according to the latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control.

In all municipalities except Mission, case rates have more than halved since November.

From Dec. 10 to 16, Abbotsford had a total of 58 cases (rate of five per 100,000), Agassiz/Harrison had a total of two cases (3 per 100,000), Chilliwack had 54 cases (7 per 100,000), Hope had three cases (five per 100,000), and Mission had 50 (15 per 100,000).

From Nov. 2 to Nov. 8, Abbotsford had a case rate of 23 per 100,000, Agassiz/Harrison had a rate of 14, Chilliwack had a rate of 20, Hope had a rate of 18, and Mission had a rate of 21.

Chilliwack and Hope have shown slight increases, while Abbotsford and Agassiz/Harrison have shown slight decreases from last week’s case rates. Mission’s rate jumped up by a third (from 10 to 15 per 100,000).

Vaccination progress has slowed across the region, but is still ticking upwards. Since Nov. 8, Abbotsford has gone from 88 to 90 per cent of its eligible population receiving its first dose, Agassiz/Harrison is at 84 to 85 per cent, Chilliwack has gone from 81 to 82 per cent, Hope has gone from 78 to 79 per cent, and Mission has gone from 81 to 83 per cent.

Across B.C., 91 per cent of the eligible population over 12-years old has received their first shot of the vaccine.

As of Dec. 9, unvaccinated individuals account for 55 per cent of all new cases, 68 per cent of hospitalizations and 78 per cent of admissions to critical care.

There have been 44 cases of the Omicron variant reported in B.C., and close to half have been related to international travel.
