Weather on Boxing Day packed a particularly cold punch this year.

According to Environment Canada, more than 20 temperature records were broken across B.C. as arctic outflow weather swooped through much of western Canada.

In Agassiz, Sunday’s temperature dropped to a frigid -14.2 C. This broke the former record set on Boxing Day 1944, which saw temps dip down to -11.1 C. This 77-year-old record was one of the oldest B.C. record broken on Sunday.

This year also saw high temperatures broken in Agassiz-Harrison. Environment Canada recorded a high of 40.4 C on Sunday, June 27. This not only broke the 2015 record by seven degrees but broke the all-time Agassiz record dating back more than 120 years. The next day, Monday, June 28, the all-time temperature record was broken again, topping the charts at 41.1 C.

Local weather records have been kept since 1889.

While the local record was clearly broken on Dec. 26, it’s a far cry from the oldest and coldest record broken in B.C. that day. Both honours belong to Prince George, where temperatures dropped to -40.7 C, breaking the 1933 record of -40 C.
