The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) held a traffic enforcement blitz Friday morning in a road-construction zone as part of a provincial awareness campaign.
The blitz ran from 9 to 11 a.m. in the area of Mt. Lehman and Marshall roads as part of the Cone Zone Campaign.
Const. Rob Dyck said the goal of the campaign, now in its ninth year, is to prevent injuries and deaths of roadside workers by reminding all motorists to obey the law when approaching a cone zone.
“When you see cones, slow down! Prepare to stop or be redirected. Always follow the instructions given by roadside workers,” Dyck said,.
In 2018, two roadside workers died and another 29 were injured as a result of being hit by a motor vehicle.
Since 2009, a total of 13 roadside workers have been killed and another 213 have been injured under similar circumstances.
Tickets to drivers can range from $196 for disobeying a flag person to $368 for using an electronic device while driving.
The campaign involved the APD partnering with IRSU (Integrated Road Safety Unit), WorkSafeBC, and the Work Zone Safety Alliance.
