Tucked away in Chilliwack, Inspired Market Gardens is a local greenhouse where curiosity is encouraged, questions are always welcome and every plant is nurtured with care. At the heart of it all is Gwen Simpson, a lifelong gardener who’s turned her love for horticulture into a way to connect with others.
“I don’t think I could ever stop gardening,” Gwen says. “It truly is a passion and feeds me as much as it feeds others.”
From late April through mid-July, Gwen opens her greenhouse to the public, offering organically grown culinary herbs, heirloom tomatoes, vibrant peppers and unique flowers. But visitors quickly discover they’re getting more than plants – they’re also receiving Gwen’s guidance, enthusiasm and years of hands-on experience.
Her greenhouse, open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is equal parts inspiration and education. Gwen’s plant posters double as mini-guides, filled with tips on care, culinary uses and companion planting. Customers learn that basil thrives in heat, rosemary may not overwinter in Chilliwack and the best herb gardens are just steps from the kitchen door.
“Helping someone realize they can grow their own food – even on a patio – is just magic,” she says. “I want people to feel like they can do it, and enjoy it.”
Gwen’s love for gardening is rooted in her own upbringing on a Chilliwack farm and enriched by years spent immersed in English garden culture. Her journey across continents always circles back to soil, sunlight and the joy of learning.
Though the greenhouse operates seasonally, Gwen’s work continues year-round. Edible flowers and lush bouquets and posies start in June and continue right through until Thanksgiving. She brings her homegrown goods to farmers’ markets and is currently preparing to launch an air-conditioned, self-serve roadside flower hut on the honour system – an upgraded version of her beloved flower cart.
Built with help from friends and volunteers, the hut embodies Gwen’s ethos: trust, community and natural beauty. “People appreciate flowers that feel real – not overly polished or perfect, they get what’s blooming in the garden” she says. “I love that.”
Supported by one “amazing” part-time staff member and occasional seasonal help, Gwen works long days – often up to 16 hours in peak season – but wouldn’t trade it. “I get to do what I love every single day,” she says. “And I get to share it with others.”
As summer unfolds, Gwen is planning workshops focused on edible plants and personal natural floral design – efforts that reflect her mission to make gardening approachable and joyful for everyone who visits.
