From runner to mentor: A remarkable journey of recovery

With community support, Paul found strength to walk – and inspire others

Elim Village, Garrison Crossing resident, Paul Bion.

To say Paul Bion is dedicated would be an understatement. For 35 years, the Garrison Crossing resident was an avid long-distance runner, completing marathons and half-marathons, and running five miles a day, six times a week. So, when a series of health challenges threatened to take away his mobility, Paul’s world was turned upside down. But thanks to the compassionate community at Elim, the 80-year-old has not only regained the ability to walk - he’s out walking every single day.

“The care aides really helped me,” Paul shares. “They were a real inspiration and would say, ‘Come on, let’s go for a walk,’ and all I could do was walk up and down the hallway. Halfway through, I was exhausted, but they kept encouraging me.”

Small steps, big progress

It was these small, consistent steps - and the unconditional support of his daughters Julie and Janette – that gradually helped Paul regain his strength. What started as a struggle has evolved into a daily routine that Paul looks forward to. Today, he walks at least twice a day and can walk up to 45 minutes at a time - a far cry from the exhaustion he once felt after a brief stroll.

Sometimes Paul is joined by Kristi, a concierge at Elim and another source of encouragement.  “The encouragement I’ve received from the people here has been incredible,” Paul reflects. “The residents are so supportive, and I get so many people telling me that I’m in their prayers. I couldn’t be more blessed.”

From runner to mentor

Having completed marathons in just over three hours, and half-marathons in under 90 minutes, Paul knows a thing or two about running. One of the people who has benefited from Paul’s knowledge and experience is Kelly, a concierge in Garrison. An enthusiastic runner herself, Kelly ran the prestigious Boston Marathon this year, and Paul took on the role of her informal coach.

“Kelly is sort of like a coach for me, and encourages me a lot,” Paul says. “I’ve given her some advice on how to run intervals, which was always a big part of my training.”

While it’s tempting to become obsessed with faster times, Paul believes the true joy in running - and walking - comes from enjoying the experience, not just the finish line. “You get obsessed with wanting to go faster and farther, but it takes away the enjoyment,” Paul says. “I want to walk for a long time. Don’t spoil it by rushing.”

A fresh start awaits!
