Choosing a career is a big step and it can be hard to know exactly what you want to do. There are so many choices and possibilities that finding your niche can seem daunting.

That’s exactly how Alan Martens felt back in 1993. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after he finished school. He had mechanical aptitude and a good attitude, but like many young people, no practical manufacturing experience. He wasn’t sure where he wanted to go, but he was open to opportunity, so he took a job with TYCROP Manufacturing’s Trailer Division sweeping floors and general labour.

That choice to join the TYCROP team eventually led Alan to where he is today, President of TYCROP Trailers.

Modestly, Alan notes that “I stood on the shoulders of those who went before me. I endeavour to be the leader for the next group.” It’s all about teamwork at TYCROP and good teams have great leadership which creates the best environment to work together and for each other.

A good foundation and a can-do attitude

As an employer, TYCROP Manufacturing believes that a company is only as good as its employees—and those employees are worth investing in.

TYCROP sponsored Alan to get his Trailer Mechanic Red Seal ticket, and a Class One licence. Now he could drive the big trailers that he was already a part of building.

Gradually, he took on supervisor roles, which came with more training. In 2000, TYCROP opened a trailer-repair facility, and Alan was asked if he would be willing to head that up as the Repair Manager—an opportunity that he took.

As the innovative company grew, so too, did the opportunities it presented. In 2014, TYCROP created a new division, and Alan became the Transportation Group Manager. Continuing to grow his career with the growing company, Alan became President of TYCROP Trailers in 2015.

Good people, good team, great products

It’s a model that works—even in the realm of big business. TYCROP grew from its grassroots beginnings, becoming a player on the world stage, but never lost sight of the values that got it off the ground in the first place—innovation and good people doing good work.

Alan’s journey from the shop floor to the president’s office shows how the pieces of the puzzle come together. If he could give one piece of advice to young people looking for a start in the working world it’s this: “If you don’t know what to do, do anything! Every avenue is open to you at TYCROP.”
