For more than two decades, the Christmas car giveaway has been a cherished tradition in Chilliwack, bringing joy and support to deserving families during the holiday season.

Fix Auto, with Valley Toyota for the past 16 years, Simpson Auto, Napa Auto Parts, Hub International, Big O Tires, Certified Auto Sound, Tom’s Auto Glass and The Chilliwack Progress all contribute to this event, the initiative reflects the spirit of community and the transformative power of generosity.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the giveaway, and organizers are excited to provide a reliable vehicle to a local family in need. The 2024 gift – a 2011 Toyota Sienna – has been generously traded in by a client at Valley Toyota. While cars are often featured in the program, this family-friendly van is expected to make an especially significant impact.

"What better way to help someone through the holidays than by giving them a vehicle?” says Niels Larsen, Sales Manager at Valley Toyota. “Many recipients don’t have reliable transportation. They’re taking the bus, managing kids’ school runs or struggling to get to work. This gift can change the course of their future.”

The process is as meaningful as the gift itself. Community members nominate deserving individuals by submitting letters (300 words or less) detailing why the nominee should be chosen. These heartfelt submissions are reviewed by a group of local businesses involved in the giveaway.

Each year, between 40 and 60 nominations are received, a number that has grown in recent years due to rising financial pressures on families. “It’s really hard to pick a recipient because there are so many in need, especially with the the cost of living nowadays,” Larsen says. However, the effort is worth it when the recipient is surprised with the life-changing news.

Adding to the magic is the element of surprise. Recipients are typically unaware they’ve been nominated and chosen until the big reveal, making the moment deeply emotional. “There’s such a wave of emotion when we gift this vehicle. It’s not just about giving a vehicle– it’s about empowering someone to better their life and their family’s future,” Larsen says.

This year’s giveaway is set to coincide with the holiday season, and organizers encourage community participation. Submissions will open at the end of the November and can be sent to Fix Auto via email or mail. Further details on how to apply will be announced on Valley Toyota's Facebook in the coming weeks.

As Chilliwack prepares to celebrate another Christmas car giveaway, the event continues to embody the holiday spirit of kindness, community and hope. It’s a tradition that not only uplifts recipients but also showcases the power of coming together to make a difference.
