With bold choreography and a stunningly unique blend of dance styles, taqəš and Other Works by Ballet Kelowna comes to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre to celebrate the season kick-off on Sept. 14! This evening will bring a modern edge to a traditional medium that will captivate a contemporary as well as traditional audience.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Season Kick Off Soirée will feature a guest speaker, as well as an exhibit by the Salish Weavers that highlights beautiful pieces that will be on display.
Choreographed by Cameron Fraser-Monroe, Taqəš brings together his classical ballet training with the knowledge of traditional Coast Salish, Grass and Hoop Dance, with his experience as a contemporary dancer.
Using all of these skills, Taqəš tells the traditional story of "Raven Returns to Water," weaving together these various dance styles to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and stories of Homalco, Klahoose, K’omoks and Tla’amin Nations.
Also featured in the evening’s program will be The Cowboy Act Suite, a satirical and high-energy performance also choreographed by Fraser-Monroe.
This piece challenges the colonial perspective often seen in historical depictions of cowboy and Indigenous relations and reflects history through the eyes of an Indigenous director, offering a fresh and thought-provoking narrative.
Don’t miss this exciting and culturally rich evening that promises to be a shining gem of the season!
