Following his provincial victory as a coach with the Fraser Valley Selects, Chilliwack’s Connor MacMillan wanted in on the action as a player.
MacMillan returned to Kamloops – the location of the previous weekend’s U18 provincials – taking part in the Pacific Coast League’s Challenge Cup Finals as a member of the Ares Football Association.
After a successful running in the group stage, the club earned themselves a spot in the semi-final on Saturday (July 24) where they took on Victoria FC. After falling to a 2-0 deficit early on, Ares battled back taking Victoria to penalties where they were able to secure a 3-2 victory and with it, a spot in the final.
Ares matched up against host Kamloops in the championship game, who upset league winners Khalsa Sporting out of Coquitlam in the other semi-final. It was a tightly contested match between the two clubs, with Ares coming out on top taking a 3-2 victory.
It was a standout performance for MacMillan who assisted on all three of the team’s goals and even drew a penalty kick. His efforts earned him the Sheila Anderson Memorial Challenge Cup MVP trophy.
