A police chase caught on video in Chilliwack Saturday night (Aug. 31) ended with the arrest of a prolific offender.
It all began at about 10 p.m., when RCMP tried to pull over a driver. Cpl. Carmen Kiener of the Chilliwack RCMP said the driver fled, and then "subsequently engaged in driving behaviours that were increasingly dangerous for the public."
A passerby caught videos of the ensuing police chase, where it ended in the 7000 block of Vedder Road. In one of the videos, a white SUV with apparent damage to the back end is shown speeding around a corner at Vedder Road and Knight Road, and turning into a gas station. A second video shows the SUV being followed by multiple RCMP vehicles, and leaving the gas station by jumping the sidewalk.
The SUV is quickly surrounded by RCMP vehicles and comes to a stop.
Kiener said officers arrested Ian Gerald Mountain, 39, and that he remained in custody as of Sept. 3. He faces charges of dangerous operation, flight from police officer, operation while prohibited, and operation while impaired and obstruction.
She added that neither Mountain nor any police officers were injured in the chase or arrest. Officers from the Chilliwack RCMP traffic unit, general duty and support sections were involved in the incident.
Mountain has previously been on the Crimestoppers Most Wanted list, and has an extensive criminal record for various offences including theft, drug trafficking, and assault.
