Three of Chilliwack's busiest intersections saw multiple crashes a week in 2023, according to the newest data compiled from publicly available ICBC information.
There were 83 reported crashes on Vedder Road at Promontory Road/Watson Road, with 31 injured people reported.
Also high on the local list is the Luckakuck Way and Vedder Road intersection and turning lanes, with 80 reported crashes involving 26 injured people.
Third on the list is the Evans Road roundabout, with 70 reported crashes and 25 injured people. That works out to an average rate of one every five days.
The three intersections are also the most problematic when looking at ICBC's five-year statistics.
From 2019 to 2023 inclusive, the Evans Road roundabout saw 385 crashes. The Luckakuck Way and Vedder Road intersection saw 360, and Vedder Road at Promontory Road/Watson Road saw 346.
From there, the numbers drop considerably, both for 2023 and for the five-year statistics. Last year, for example, Hocking Avenue and Yale Road saw 38 crashes, while the on-ramp and off-ramps at Highway 1 and Yale Road in the Greendale area saw 32 crashes.
There were more 1,400 crashes attributed to Chilliwack in 2023, but the map provides several disclaimers that the data is not always reliable. It also doesn't take crashes in parking lots or involved parked cars into consideration.
The map does include data for the past five years across the province, broken down by city and some smaller regions.
The intersection with the highest number of crashes in the Lower Mainland is at the Alex Fraser Bridge and Cliveden Avenue, with 442 crashes in 2023.
The ICBC data also breaks down various other types of crashes, including crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists.
There were 35 reported crashes involving cyclists in 2023 in Chilliwack, and one in Cultus Lake. There were 40 crashes involving pedestrians reported in Chilliwack in the same time frame.
The Evans roundabout saw three crashes that involved motorcycles in 2023, but a total of 30 motorcycle crashes across the city.
Fatalities are only reported regionally by the ICBC data, and the last data available is from 2022.
