Six Chilliwack businesses have been hit with fines over the past three years, for non-compliance with Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers Program or International Mobility Program.

The types of businesses vary, but include two numbered companies, three local farms and one restaurant.

The business that has received the steepest fines, at $30,000, is one of the numbered companies. The fines were applied in 2021 and according to an online government listing, remains unpaid.

The lowest fine for a Chilliwack company has been $750.

Employers who hire temporary workers are inspected to make sure they meet their responsibilities as an employer under both of these programs. If an employer is found non-compliant, they can receive a combination of fines and/or a ban on hiring temporary workers.

The most common infraction for Chilliwack’s employers on the list was for not giving an inspector the documents they asked for.

There are 865 Canadian businesses listed on the government database, under the section titled “Work In Canada” on canada.ca. The information is openly provided alongside the federal government’s foreign worker programs, and goes back many years.

Of those businesses listed, 48 are in Surrey.
