Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce presents a screening of 'Rooted Waters: The Names and Stories of Nine Bands Connected by Streams' in Chilliwack on June 20.
The film focuses on Stó:lō people, stories, and places as shared through Naxaxalhts’i Sonny McHalsie and his place name tours.
The Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce presents the film screening as part of an evening of culture and celebration at The'í:tselíya - SAY Health & Community Centre.
"We have journeyed through our local Indigenous lands and had the privilege of listening to the stories passed down through generations, tales that intimately connect the Stó:lō people to the land, waters, and skies of this region," according to organizers. "Through these stories, we've gained a deeper understanding of their cultures, traditions, and the significance of place names that reflect their deep-rooted connection to the land."
The screening is a culmination of the journey by Chamber members to share the wisdom gathered, the stories heard, and the connections forged.
"Through the words of Sonny McHalsie and the vibrant Indigenous entertainment on display, we aim to honour and celebrate the profound legacy of the Stó:lō people in our community."
With bannock and light refreshments on offer, organizers invite everyone to partake in a spirit of unity, and understanding, as the event is proudly presented in collaboration with CEPCO, Prospera Credit Union, and Tourism Chilliwack.
