A man was airlifted to hospital after he was hit by a train in Chilliwack on Wednesday.

The call came in around 4:48 p.m. for the collision involving a pedestrian on Jan. 15 on the tracks that cross Eagle Landing Parkway.

A helicopter was dispatched to the scene and a landing zone was set up minutes after the incident happened. By 5:10 p.m., the helicopter had landed in a field, south of the tracks.

Emergency responders found the person alive a few hundred metres northwest of the train crossing on Squiala First Nation.

RCMP are working to identify the man, believed to be in his 40s, Cpl. Carmen Kiener stated in an email to The Chilliwack Progress.

He suffered "serious injuries" and was airlifted to hospital for treatment where he remains, she said.

"No witnesses were identified in the area but investigative avenues are being followed to determine what lead up to the incident."

The Chilliwack Fire Department, RCMP and BC Ambulance Service were all on scene.

Traffic was rerouted as a result, and police were on scene for nearly three hours.

It was the second incident where a train hit a person in Chilliwack in less than two weeks. The other was an early-morning fatal crash on Jan. 3 where a woman died.

RCMP are asking if anyone witnessed the Jan. 15 collision, or if anyone has dashcam footage of the area leading up to the incident, to call 604-792-4611 and quote file #25-1958.
